Music occupies a central role in the oeuvre of Canadian artist Rodney Graham (1949–2022). In the 1980s, Graham became fascinated with Richard Wagner’s Parsifal opera and the musical loop added to the piece by his assistant Engelbert Humperdinck to allow a set change during its 1882 premiere. The event inspired Graham to create his Parsifal series of works, currently on view at Herbert Foundation.

For his most ambitious Parsifal adaptation, Graham created his own musical loop, one that was based on Humperdinck’s additional music. Graham assigned an individual repetition frequency to each orchestra instrument as a result of which the loop, if started in 1882, would conclude only after 39 billion years. Graham pushes Humperdinck’s principle to its limits with this absurdly long run time.

Passages of Graham’s work were performed for the first and last time in Vancouver in 1996. Almost 30 years later, Herbert Foundation is now staging a new, live rendition of Rodney Graham’s Parsifal (1882–38,969,364,735).

Audio engineer Gary Bourgeois excerpted the score for the passage that precisely overlaps with a 15 June 2025 performance at 15:30 from Graham’s masterly composition. The concert will be performed on clarinet, bass clarinet, cell, harp and vibraphone by the Extended Music Collective chamber music ensemble.

Muziek neemt binnen het oeuvre van de Canadese kunstenaar Rodney Graham (1949–2022) een centrale plaats in. In de jaren 1980 raakte Graham gefascineerd door Richard Wagners opera Parsifal, en meer bepaald de muzikale lus die assistent Engelbert Humperdinck toevoegde om een decorwissel bij de première in 1882 mogelijk te maken. Deze anekdote inspireerde Graham tot het realiseren van zijn reeks Parsifal-werken, die momenteel te zien zijn bij Herbert Foundation.

Voor zijn meest ambitieuze Parsifal-bewerking creëerde Graham een eigen muzikale lus, gebaseerd op de supplementaire muziek van Humperdinck. Hierbij gaf Graham elke orkeststem een specifieke herhalingsfrequentie waardoor de lus, indien gestart in 1882, pas na 39 miljard jaar voltooid zou zijn. Met deze absurd lange tijdsduur drijft Graham Humperdincks principe tot het uiterste.

In 1996 werden fragmenten uit Grahams stuk voor de eerste en enige keer live opgevoerd in Vancouver. Bijna dertig jaar later realiseert Herbert Foundation opnieuw een live-uitvoering van Rodney Graham’s Parsifal (1882–38,969,364,735).

Audio-ingenieur Gary Bourgeois extraheerde uit Grahams magistrale compositie de partituur van de passage die exact samenvalt met een uitvoering op 15 juni 2025 om 15:30. Het concert wordt vertolkt door klarinet, basklarinet, cello, harp en vibrafoon en uitgevoerd door het kamermuziekensemble Extended Music Collective.
