Op woensdag 11 februari om 19:00 organiseert Herbert Foundation in samenwerking met MER. Books de book launch van “Donald Judd: The Low Countries 1966-1971”, het eerste boek in een nieuwe reeks cahiers van de onderzoeksgroep KB45 (Kunst in België sinds 1945, Universiteit Gent), geschreven door prof. Wouter Davidts.  

In “Donald Judd: The Low Countries 1966–1971” belicht Davidts de formatieve jaren van de kunstenaar in de Lage Landen. Gebaseerd op een veelheid aan archiefmateriaal uit Nederland en België, toont deze publicatie hoe Judds werk, in dezelfde periode waarin de kunstenaar zijn artistieke taal op punt stelde in de VS, ook opmerkelijke institutionele en kritische aandacht genoot in Europa. Het boek vormt een boeiende analyse van het wereldwijde bereik en de blijvende impact van Judd’s toonaangevende minimalisme.

We starten de avond met een gesprek tussen Wouter Davidts en de kunstenaar Koenraad Dedobbeleer in de archiefruimte van Herbert Foundation. In de ruimte presenteren we enkele vitrines met een selectie eigen archiefmateriaal, aansluitend bij de publicatie. We sluiten af met een receptie in de voormalige living van Anton en Annick Herbert.

Koenraad Dedobbeleer is een kunstenaar, gevestigd in Brussel. Zijn werk bestaat uit sculpturen, in-situ installaties, foto’s, publicaties en edities, zit boordevol associaties en kunsthistorische verwijzingen, en is niet geheel vrij van ironie. Hij is professor beeldhouwkunst en vicerector aan de Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, Duitsland.

Wouter Davidts is professor Moderne en Hedendaagse kunst aan de Universiteit Gent (UGent), waar hij de interdisciplinaire onderzoeksgroep KB45 (Kunst in België sinds 1945) leidt. Hij publiceert over musea, hedendaagse kunst en architectuur.

On Wednesday 11 February at 7 p.m., Herbert Foundation together with MER. Books organises the book launch of “Donald Judd: The Low Countries 1966-1971”, the first book in a new series by the research group KB45 (Art in Belgium since 1945, Ghent University), authored by Prof. Wouter Davidts.

In “Donald Judd: The Low Countries 1966–1971”, Davidts explores the artist’s formative years in the Low Countries. Drawing on extensive archival material from the Netherlands and Belgium, this publication unveils how, during the same period that Judd was defining his artistic language in the US, his work was also gaining significant institutional and critical attention across Europe. The book offers a compelling examination of the global reach and lasting impact of Judd’s pioneering minimalism.

We start the evening with a conversation between Wouter Davidts and the artist Koenraad Dedobbeleer in the archive space of Herbert Foundation. Some displays will be set up with a selection of in-house archival material in line with the publication. The night will be closed with a drink in the former living room of Anton and Annick Herbert.

Koenraad Dedobbeleer is an artist based in Brussels. His work consists of sculptures, in-situ installations, photographs, publications, and editions, is full of associations and art historical references, and is not entirely free of irony. He is a professor of sculpture and Vice Rector at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, Germany.

Wouter Davidts is Associate Professor of Modern and Contemporary art at Ghent University (UGent), where he leads the interdisciplinary research group KB45 (Art in Belgium since 1945). He has published widely on the museum, contemporary art and architecture.
